Koh Mak Introduction

Koh Mak is a small 16 square kilometer island in the province of Trat with stunningly beautiful white beaches and clear blue water. Settlement first began by a Chinese official in the late 19th century as a coconut and rubber plantation before Thai ownership. It has been called one of the safest places in the world and is even free from malaria, a pleasant surprise as it is generally a major tropical health issue. It’s no wonder it has attracted filmmakers for years given its stunning scenery. The UK’s Sunday Times distinguished Koh Mak as one of the top ten beaches in the world. Despite the accolades, it is not popularly known as a tourist destination and makes for a perfect relaxation getaway. Around 600 local people call the island home and act as a gold standard of Thai values and Buddhist lifestyle. Koh Mak does not have an ATM so plan accordingly by bringing a cash reserve from the mainland.

Koh Mak Information

  • Koh Mak Beaches

One of the advantages of Koh Mak is that it is small and easier to get a sense of the microclimates and what beach environment is best for you. Ao Kao is the most popular beach to the southwest of the island dotted with 12 small resorts along the 5 kilometer sandy stretch. To the northwest is Ao Suan Yai, a smaller 3 kilometer stretch of beach and quieter with only 3 resorts. If you seek a more isolated spot, head for Ao Tan, it’s not great for swimming, but offers a peaceful environment to walk along the sand and get further out on the ocean by walking down a newly built wooden pier.

  • Koh Mak Accommodation

There are no songtaews (pick-up truck taxi), but most resorts offer pickup services from the pier to your accommodation. Some of the most reputable options include Plubpla Koh Mak Retreat, Bamboo hideaway, Ao Kao White Sand Beach Resort, Koh Mak Cococape Resort and Koh Mak Buri Hut. Unsurprisingly you get what you pay for, but there are certainly more basic options like the Island Hut Resort. These options may be stripped of the more luxurious amenities, but the beach is often just steps away from your front door.

  • Things to do in Koh Mak

Despite being such a small and relatively quiet island there’s a lot to explore and lots of things to do. Mountain bikes and motorbikes are great ways to check out the small villages and the Buddhist temple at Aow Nid. If you want to get more of the ocean, rent a kayak to survey the coast for go so far as to explore tiny nearby islands like Koh Phi and Koh Kham. At extreme low tide you can even walk along an exposed strip of sand to Koh Kham. Further away is Koh Maisee, a small island home to pearl farmers, which offers the best prices around. Koh Mak is situated in a marine park, which makes for spectacular conservation of the ocean wildlife and memorable snorkeling and scuba trips. You can even try something knew like studying at the sailing school or taking a Thai cooking class.

  • Eating in Koh Mak

Dining on Koh Mak includes fresh, delicious and affordable seafood. The appropriately named Koh Mak Seafood is located in a historic building once owned by one of the island’s owners and now offers local fisherman’s catch with a gentle sea breeze. Relax, BuriHut and Ao Kao are more serene spots overlooking the beach. The Koh Mak Island Restaurant offers an equal quality meal, but provides a different view, one perched on a high hill for an elevated and expansive perspective. You will not go hungry on Koh Mak!
