Koh Kood Introduction
Koh Kood Information
Koh Kood Beaches
There are a variety of beaches to explore in Koh Kood. Tapao Beach is the first you will come into contact with as it is the only port on Koh Kood, located on the west side of the island. The west side is scattered with beautiful beaches with a mix of preserved natural beauty and resort development, whereas the east side is even less developed. Just north of Tapao Beach is Yai Ki Beach, a peaceful scene with the unique feature of a canal running through it. One of the most popular beaches on the other side of the island is Kluai beach, known for its fine white sand and seaweed. If you’re looking to get even more remote, Yai Kerd and Ta Tin beaches are good options as they are only accessible by boat.
Koh Kood Accommodation
In terms of accommodation, backpackers will find prices are higher than elsewhere. For a long time, access to the island came about in tour groups with few independent travelers. That has changed over the years, but for some reason the businesses operated largely by Thais from Bangkok and Russians from Pattaya have been able to capitalize on the beautiful beaches with higher prices. Budgeted options include guest houses that are as cheap as 350 baht a night to plush resorts at 4,000 baht a night. There’s much in between, all of which accommodate those looking to relax by the beach and many that offer great food and Thai massages.
Things to do in Koh Kood
When you arrive in Koh Kood you will instantly notice the Ao Salat fishing village, built on stilts and rising out of the ocean. This village as well as Ao Yai on the opposite end of the island are incredibly charming and good indicators of the pace of life in Koh Kood. There is much natural beauty to explore including the ancient Macca trees and the three tiered Khlong Chao Waterfall, in which you can swim, both located centrally on the island. For those looking to stretch their legs, there’s a great trekking trail that leads to Khao Rearub, a cave of great religious significance. If you want to cover more of the coastline it’s possible to rent a fishing boat and cruise on the water for an afternoon. At the end of the day, establishments like the Sunset Bar and View Point Cafe offer stunning views and relaxation under the stars.
Koh Kood Water Activities
Besides laying out on the beach, there are plenty of water activities available to have fun in the ocean. They can be as laid back as riding on a banana boat to as rigorous as 12 day kayaking expeditions. Of course it’s possible to be less extreme and take a mere couple hour kayak or canoe trip, a good way to discover deserted beaches and get a closer look at otherwise inaccessible natural features. Getting a look at life under the water is readily available as well in the forms of both snorkeling and scuba diving. Walk right off the beach, take a boat into open water or to the small islands just off the coast to swim with beautiful marine life in clear waters.
