Ayutthaya Information

Thailand is predominantly known as an island destination, but what many people don’t know is that it contains many historical and ancient places carrying high cultural value. One of these places is the ancient city of Ayutthaya. It was founded in 1350 and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It used to be Asia’s trading capital and a major commerce hub for many merchants. Ayutthaya was even considered the largest city in the world in the year 1700 with a huge prospering population.

Highlights

  • Wat Phra Sri Sanphet

Still standing as an amazing representation of Thailand’s past, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is a stunning temple built on an old Grand Palace ground. Its name in English translates as Temple of the Holy, Splendid, and Omniscient. In 1767, the temple was destroyed by the Burmese and what’s left are the ancient ruins in addition to 3 Chedis or chapels. The architecture of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet is so fascinating, that it served as a model for the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

  • Wat Panan Choeng

Located at Ho Rattanachai, east bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Panan Choeng is a breathtaking Buddhist temple that is distinguished by its massive golden Buddha statue that is majestic in its own right as it is highly revered mariners in the region. The statue is very large that it’s 14 meters wide and 19 meters high and considered one of the most worshiped statues in Thailand. Legend has it, that the Buddha statue wept tears when Ayutthaya was destroyed in 1767 by the Burmese.

  • Wat Phra Mahthat

Located on Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, War Phra Mahthat is a sight to behold and is a place where you would definitely want to bring your camera with you. Perhaps the most intriguing picture worthy sight in Ayutthaya is the large Buddha head situated in a deeply rooted tree. No one knows for sure how this came about, but it is debated that the cause of the locked head in the tree is the destruction and immense flood over the past years. It is believed by some that King Ramathibodi I paid tribute to his brother by building the palace and the Buddha statues after emerging victorious following their battle as who would be the best King of Siam.

  • Ayutthaya Historical Park

Holding high archaeological and cultural value, the Ayutthaya Historical Park is a recommended destination for all historians out there that want to discover and gain more insight about Thai culture and its evolution. The park has more than 65 stunning temples and incredible ruins and is considered to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is part of the preserved zone. Ayutthaya Historical Park is a great place to visit and spend your day in, even if history isn’t your main interest. It features a breathtaking view that is further emphasized by vibrant greenery and some gorgeous Buddha statues.
